As a result of both the "Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974" (the Buckley Amendment) and university policy, current and past students are entitled to information contained in their official student record files with the exception of legally excluded items.

Normally, except for the directory information, release of information must be requested or approved by the student. However, Carlow University officials and faculty who have legitimate educational interests may have access to student records without the student's consent. Access is also possible by authorized governmental representatives, officials who process financial aid applications, parents of a dependent student, and in cases of emergency, to protect the health or safety of the student. Detailed information and procedures regarding the release of directory information are available in the Office of the Registrar.

Directory information is defined as the student's name, address, telephone listing, date and place of birth, major field of study, participation in officially recognized activities and sports, dates of attendance, degrees and awards received, and the most recent previous educational agency or institution attended by the student.
